CULBERTSON- James L. Culbertson III, of Los Lunas, NM, affectionately known as Cub, age 67, passed away on Sunday, June 19, 2011. He was preceded in death by his father, James L. Culbertson II. He is survived by his wife of 19 years, Elaine; his mother, Mary J. Culbertson of Albuquerque; his son, James L. Culbertson IV and wife, Therese of Corrales; his daughter, Kelsey J. Culbertson of Albuquerque; one grandson, James Connor Culbertson (Little Cubby); his sister, Carol Hoffman and husband, Vincent of Albuquerque; step children, Celeste Ehlers of Albuquerque, Mario Gonzales and wife, Lavette of Los Lunas, Ginamarie Sconyers and husband, David of Tulsa, OK; six step grandchildren. Cub grew up in Albuquerque, graduated from the New Mexico Military Institute, and attended the University of New Mexico, where he was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. He received his bachelor’s degree from Ft. Lewis College in Durango, Colorado. He was commissioned into the United States Navy and attended flight training, where he earned his Wings as a Naval Aviator. Among his many assignments, he served as a flight instructor, safety officer, and flight commander, and flew numerous missions around the world in the P-3 aircraft. He was stationed in Antarctica and several naval air stations in the United States. He was a decorated veteran of the Viet Nam War and retired from the Navy after 20 years of service, as a Lieutenant Commander. He and his wife, Elaine have resided at the Midvalley Airpark for the past 20 years. A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 23, 2011 at Daniels Family Funeral Services Palm Chapel, 1100 Coal Ave. SE with interment to follow at Fairview Memorial Park. A reception will follow at Calvary Chapel on the Rio Grande in Belen, 19381 New Mexico 314, Belen, NM 87002.
