Jim died January 4, 2023 at the age of 80. Born in Wichita, Jim arrived in Albuquerque in 1948. He was in the first graduating class at St. Pius High School in 1960 then immediately set off for a two year stint in the Marines. Upon returning to Albuquerque Jim attended the University of New Mexico and joined the NM Air National Guard. As a fighter pilot with the 188th Tactical Fighter Squadron, 150th Tactical Fighter Group, (the “Tacos”), he flew the F100, A7 and C131 aircraft, and was among the guardsmen called to serve in Korea in 1968 for The Pueblo Crisis, gaining the hours and experience that lead him to another career flying for Continental Airlines, where he ended his time in the cockpit commanding the Boeing 777. Prior to flying for Continental Jim was an innovative News Director at KOAT-TV Channel 7, who with Max Sklower, helped secure the number one newscast position in the market for decades.
The third of six children Jim is survived by brothers Dr. Richard Riordan and wife Andra and Dr. Terry Riordan of Albuquerque and sister Mary Ellen and her husband Jim Letterio of Parrish, Florida. He was preceded in death by his parents “Buck” and Helen Riordan and brothers Robert “Bob” Riordan and Judge William “Bill” Riordan.
The family would like to thank Rebecca Moeller, Robert Estrada and Pat Sloan for their unwavering companionship and support during Jim’s last months. Known for his sharp mind and quick wit, a conversation with Jim was generally enlightening and, most certainly entertaining. As a founding member of the Albuquerque Press Club and long time Board Member it is fitting that a Celebration of His Life will be held there on February 4, 2023 at 2 p.m.
