Janet Ann “Jan” Burhans Chalfant, 78, passed away on February 3, 2025, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She was born on November 20, 1946, in Lansing, Michigan, to Gladys Pegau Burhans and Robert Alden Burhans.
Jan graduated from East Lansing, Michigan High School in 1964 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree from Michigan State University in 1968. She built a successful career as a Senior Systems Analyst, demonstrating her dedication and expertise in her field.
Jan had a lifelong passion for Morgan Horses and excelled in saddle seat riding. She was also a figure skater, a nationally ranked Gold ice dancing competitor alongside her brother, Nicholas “Nic” P. Burhans. Later in life she became an avid kayaker. Her love for these pursuits brought her joy and recognition throughout her life.
A devoted member of the Rio Rancho Presbyterian Church, Jan served as a deacon, reflecting her commitment to faith and community. Her kindness and service left a lasting impact on those around her.
Jan is survived by her beloved husband, Richard “Ric” A. Chalfant, and her brother, Nic Burhans. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 15, 2025, at 10:30 p.m. at Rio Rancho Presbyterian Church, 1004 24th Street SE, Rio Rancho, NM87124.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
