Janice R. Daigh

Janice Robinson Daigh passed away January 27, 2016 at the age of 90 years young from a ruptured brain aneurysm.  Known affectionately to her family as “Granjan”, her indomitable spirit will be missed.

Born in New York City on August 20, 1925, Janice lived in Italy and Brazil as a child, and attended high school in Syracuse, NY during World War II.  She continued her education at Wellesley College, where she obtained her BS degree in Geology.  She was passionate about Wellesley, and at the time of her death was planning the 70th reunion as president of her class.

In 1955, Janice headed west to California where she met her husband of 48 years, Robert C. Daigh.  Janice and Robert raised their three daughters in Pasadena until 1973 when they moved to Taos, New Mexico.  In 1988, Janice and Robert relocated to Corrales, where Janice lived at the time of her death.

Throughout her life, Janice never stopped learning. While living in Taos, she worked as a writer for the Taos News for many years.  In New Mexico, Janice renewed her passion for the history and archaeology of the Southwest.  On the day before her death, she volunteered at the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology at the University of New Mexico. Janice could speak five languages, which came in handy while pursuing another of her passions - travel.

Janice loved the outdoors, and her active lifestyle was an inspiration to all.  She enjoyed hiking, horseback riding, and until the end was playing tennis and taking Zumba classes. In 2012, Granjan placed first in her age group in the Boulder Bolder 10k race.  In 1976, Janice and Robert travelled over 1700 miles on horseback, retracing the route of the Domingo Escalante expedition.  She also completed the Tevis Cup, a 100-miles-in-one-day trail ride.  Janice and Robert were also active members of two equestrian hunt clubs, Juan Tomas Hounds in Albuquerque and the West Hills Hunt in Los Angeles.

Janice is survived by three daughters, Ellen Herbertson of Albuquerque, Robin Daigh of Denver, Shelley Daigh Sullivan (John) of Boulder, and her sister, Carol Hwoschinsky of Ashland, Oregon.  She was preceded in death by her husband Robert and son Pierce Avery.  Granjan is also survived by six grandchildren, Robert and Hayden Herbertson, Leighton and Brady Daigh, and Miranda and Dana Sullivan.  Janice also leaves her extended family from the United Kingdom, Portugal, and the United States.

A celebration of life service is planned in April by her family members with further details to follow.  In lieu of flowers, Janice requested charitable donations be made to The Nature Conservancy, the National Wildlife Federation, or a homeless shelter of choice.
