Age 73, resident of Albuquerque, NM passed away with his family by his side, Sunday, February 15, 2015 after a courageous battle with lung cancer. He was born in San Francisco, CA on May 28, 1941 to Alfonso and Dora Romero Chaves. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sandy, in 2007; his parents; in-laws, John and Opel Moses; brother in-law, Maurice Moses. He is survived by his children, Lee Chaves (Melissa), of Los Lunas, NM, Chantel Chaves Carrete of Bosque Farms, NM; his grandchildren, Kayla, Amanda, Clay, Cloe, Aiden, Xyler, Lianna; siblings, Janice Chaves Rubi (Isidro), Tom Chaves (Carol); nephews, JJ Moses, Eddie Stilwell, Mark, Adam, Devlin and Daniel Rubi, Tommy and Matthew Chaves; his nieces Laura Rubi Harris, Joanna Rubi, and Danielle Chaves; his sister-in-law Lee Ann Moses Fusco (Shephan, and brother-in-law Greg (Sue) Moses of Medford, OR; his uncle Andy Chaves of Albuquerque, NM and his Aunt Dorothy Chavez of San Mateo, CA. and grew up in Ogden, UT, where he attended St. Josephs High School and was part of the wrestling team. Jerry joined the Navy in 1959 and was honorably discharged in 1961. He was in Albuquerque for two years and then moved to Ventura, CA where he met his wife Sandy Moses. They were married in 1967. Jerry worked at Point Mugu Naval Base in Ventura, CA for ten years. In 1977 he moved his family to Medford, OR and went to work for Global Marine aboard the Glomar Challenger Ship as a welder. In 1986 Jerry, Sandy and their children moved to Belen, NM. Jerry was a Roman Catholic who attended Mass at Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church. He worked at Plaza Inn as their Maintenance foreman until he retire to care for his wife Sandy for the last then years of her life. Jerry was a jack of all trades. There wasn't anything he couldn't fix. He served as the on-site manager and co-owner for the South Main Mobile Home Park in Belen for 30 years. He loved to cook for his family and friends. As a young man in Ogden, UT, he raised show pigeons, and loved to go deer hunting with his father and brother Tom. He especially enjoyed fishing for salmon in Oregon. In New Mexico he loved to gather Pinon nuts and breed Chihuahua dogs. Jerry's children and grandchildren were his greatest pride and joy. He was a devoted father and grandfather. His children and grandchildren are his lasting legacy. A Rosary will be recited at 10:00 am, Friday, February 20, 2015 with a Mass of Christian Burial following at 10:30 am, at Prince of Peace Catholic Community, with Fr. Michael Shae as celebrant, 12500 Carmel, NE, Albuquerque, NM 87122. A reception will follow in the parish hall. In lieu of flowers, donation may be made in Jerry's honor to Belen High School Wrestling Team, 1619 W. Delgado Ave., Belen, NM, 87002.
