Jesse (Bob) Wayne Childers, Sr.

May 31, 1932 — July 3, 2021

Jesse Wayne Childers Sr.

Our beloved Jesse (Bob) Childers passed away on Saturday July 3, 2021, after a brief illness. Born in Oklahoma City, OK, May 31,1932 to John Roberts Childers and Delilah O'Donnell, the seventh of ten children. His family was from Paul's Valley, OK.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Sofia Childers; his son, Jesse W. and wife Lila; daughters: Linda Fouch and husband Forest, Debbie Childers, Judy Pellerin, Crystal Childers, Patty Dicks and husband Ernie and Donna Childers; 16 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren and numerous foster children (including Sabrina Busico).

He was a man of many talents and went from rags to riches (so to speak). During his younger years, he became an orphan at 10 years old, took care of his two sisters until he enlisted in the Army in 1950. He served two tours of duty in Korea and survived 258 days of combat as a tank driver for the 24th Armored Infantry having fought in numerous battles. He was awarded: Korean Service Medal, two Bronze Stars, UN Service Medal, and a commendation from the Korean President for services rendered.

Between deployments, he met his wife to be and the love of his life, Sofia Madrigal of El Paso, TX where he was stationed. He married Sofia Madrigal on December 6, 1953 and reared seven children. Upon completion of his service in the Army, he entered an apprenticeship as Bricklayer/Blocklayer/Stone Mason. He moved his family to Albuquerque, NM where he worked until he obtained his contractor license in 1983. He became a Building Inspector with the City of Albuquerque.  He retired in 2000.

In his final days, those who gathered would say he was always the same guy, a common thread in so many lives. He never met a stranger and loved to horse-trade automotives. He loved his family, friends, pets and a good cup of coffee with his daily newspaper. For many, he will be remembered as a kind, honest beyond measure man who cared for all. A family man who had a great love for life; his greatest attribute was his honesty and second greatest was his willingness to share with those less fortunate.
