Joan Carol Pontsler

Joan Carol Pontsler, loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother passed peacefully at home among loves ones at the age of 89 on January 28, 2021. She was born in Kewanee, Illinois on October 10, 1931. The family moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico in July 1966. Her husband, Clark “Boss Pontsler, was the Santa Fe High School Band director and Secondary Music Coordinator for Santa Fe Public Schools from 1966 to 1989. Joan took a career as School Secretary to Chaparral Elementary School where she worked from 1968 to 1991. Upon retirement, Joan and Clark became snowbirds down in Apache Junction, Arizona where they enjoyed their time six months out of each of the fifteen years. In 2003 they moved to Rio Rancho, NM where they became members of Rio Rancho United Methodist Church. She enjoyed being a member of the Chancel Choir and participating in many committees and activities. Throughout her life, home was the focus point for all the family. Always filled with love and care.

She is survived by her son, Gary Pontsler, daughter, Melody Lee (Brian), son-in-law, Joseph Engle Sr., sister, Jayne Kemerling (Ray) four grandchildren – Devon Kaplan (Jack), Dustin Lee (Sara), Joseph Engle Jr. (Vicki), Monica Engle, great grandchildren – Michael Markham Jr., Austin, Claira, Jackson, Orion and Oliver. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.

Preceded in passing by her parents, Gilbert and Gertrude Johnson, husband Clark Pontsler, daughter Nancy Engle, granddaughter Jessica Engle, brother Richard Johnson and sister-in-law Lois Johnson.

There will be a celebration of her life at Rio Rancho United Methodist Church, 1652 Abrazo Road NE in Rio Rancho at 10:00 am on Friday, February 19. Followed by a reception from 12:00pm to 4:00pm at the home residence.
