Hand, John Thomas

Age 84, passed away Tuesday, March 27, 2018 in Albuquerque, NM. He was born in Bisbee, AZ on October 4, 1933, to John P. and Ellen (Rogers) Hand. John moved to Datil, NM in 1953 and worked along side Marvin Ake on the C-N ranch. He met and married Helen Monte in 1969 and together they worked hard and bought a ranch near Datil in 1971. He was County Commissioner for Catron County from 1978 to 2003. He served on the BLM Resource Advisory Board and was the Catron County GOP chairman for many years. He was also on the Region 5 Housing Authority Board during the Gary Johnson administration. He was a long time member of the NM Farm and Livestock Bureau and the NM Cattle Growers Association. John was a devoted family man first and foremost. He loved spending time with his grandsons and telling them stories about ranching.. He loved to read and do crossword puzzles. John will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. John is survived by wife of 49 years, Helen (Monte) Hand; daughter, Anita A. Hand; son, John T. Hand, Jr.; grandsons, Robert D. Hand and John T. Hand, III; sisters, Anita (LaVar) Larson and Patricia (Joe) Frannea; brother, Michael (Linda) Hand; and a special "adopted" daughter, Cherreda L. Piasso. John may have had only 2 biological children, but he "adopted" so many with his generosity and love. Services will be held on Saturday, March 31, 2018, 11:00 am, at the Datil School Gymnasium, Datil, NM. Interment to follow at the Hand Family Ranch. John was a long time supporter and advocate for Agriculture and his passion can be remembered with donations to the Lineberry Foundation, NM Cattle Growers Foundation or NM Farm and Livestock Bureau.
