JOHNSTON- John G. Johnston, age 92, passed away on Thursday, June 30, 2011 after a short illness. He is survived by his three children, Lucille J. Snell and husband, John of Waldorf, MD, Barbara Johnston and partner Janis E. White of Albuquerque, and Robert H. Johnston and partner Jill S. Knaak, two grandsons, Ryan A. Johnston and Jason T. Johnston of Goodyear, AZ; one sister, Mary J. Culbertson; niece, Carol T. Hoffman and husband, Vince. His wife of 40 years, Elizabeth H. “Betty” Johnston, nephew, James L. Culbertson, III and sister Mildred J. Glover preceded him in death. Born in Vincennes, IN, John earned a BS in Physics from Michigan State University and worked in the naval shipyards during WWII. He and Betty moved to Albuquerque in 1951 from Vincennes with his two sisters and their families. They owned and operated Emmons Oil Company. After they closed the business, John worked for Horn Oil Company, Plateau Oil Company, and Steere Tank Lines. He retired in 1984. He was always involved in his children’s activities, umpiring little league games, attending softball games and band concerts. He loved to travel, and especially enjoyed railroads of all types and ages. John had a love affair with New Mexico and its people from the day his family moved here. John adored his cat, Wizard, his faithful companion of many years. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Friends of the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad or Animal Humane Association of New Mexico. Private family graveside services will be held.
