John Lewis Kilpatrick

April 4, 1935 — December 5, 2012

Kilpatrick, John Lewis �Mr. Saxophone�- age 77, passed away Wednesday, December 5, 2012. He was born in Lubbock, TX on April 4, 1935, to Dan and Pearlie Kilpatrick. John was the oldest of 10 children. He attended Ella R. Iles Elementary and Dunbar High School. John was in the Dunbar band and he was the highest honored when he graduated from Dunbar High School. John then attended Wiley College in Marshall, Texas where he pursued his career in music. He received his BA in music and moved to Amarillo, Texas and started his first quartet �The John Lewis Quartet�. He then moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico with his grandmother Ella Dawson and his uncle Josh O�Neal. His uncle loved him as a son and was very instrumental in his life and his music. His uncle played the drums in his band until his health began to fail, but was always there to support him. John left this life suffering, to enter into a life of peace and rest around God�s throne. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Lola; brother Sylvester and sister Obrey. John is survived by his brother Dan Kilpatrick and wife Mattie; sisters Audrey Brightmon and husband Willie, Joyce Flora and husband James, Teresa Hayden and husband William, Carol Drewery and husband Joe, Yvonne Montgomery and husband Alpho, Robbie Miller and husband Charles, his Quartet and a host of relatives and friends. A Visitation will be held Saturday, December 15, 2012 at 9:00 am at First Congregation United Church of Christ, 2801 Lomas SE, Albuquerque, NM. The Service will begin at 11:00 am also at First Congregation United Church of Christ. John accepted the Lord in his life on October 12, 2012. We love you John but God loved you more. Rest in peace.
