SHUMARD_Jon Terry Shumard, 64, loving son of George and Jurhee Shumard, passed away in Baghdad, Iraq, due to complications from a stroke while in his living quarters at the US Embassy in the International Zone. Born in Ardmore, Oklahoma, Jon and the family moved to Roswell, NM, in 1953 followed by the family's move to Clovis, NM in 1955. Jon excelled in both academics and team athletics before graduating from Clovis High School in 1963 and attending the University of New Mexico (UNM). Following his freshman year at UNM, Jon was drafted into the US Army and served two years, including a one year tour of duty in Viet Nam. Honorably discharged in 1966, Jon soon joined Mountain Bell Telephone Company which subsequently became US West Telecommunications. He started work in entry-level positions, but after returning to UNM while working for the phone company, he earned his Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration and later was one of the early graduates from the Executive MBA Program at the Robert O. Anderson Graduate School of Business at UNM. Jon rose through the ranks and retired as a US West executive in June 1998, his last assignment being Vice President of Eastern European Operations for a subsidiary called Media One in Prague, the Czech Republic. Following his retirement, Jon worked for the US Department of State and the US Department of Defense in Baghdad in several capacities. Jon is survived by his son, TSgt. Jon Eric Shumard, a career non-commissioned officer stationed at Grand Forks AFB, North Dakota; grandsons, Cory and Tyler of Alamogordo, NM; two daughters, Laurie David of Corrales, NM, and Shelley O'Conner of Rio Rancho, NM; grandchildren, Matthew and Meghan David of Corrales, NM; and two brothers, Kermit and Rick of Placitas, NM.
