Boehning, Joseph F. FAIA
Joe Boehning, the architect of “the Pit,” age 85, died at home on Saturday, December 10, 2016, exactly where he wanted to be with his loving partner in all things, Cyndy Nellos, providing care for him. Joe was a noted second generation architect born March 27, 1931 in Albuquerque. He attended Monte Vista Elementary; Jefferson Jr. High; graduated from Albuquerque High School in 1949 where he played football, basketball, and baseball. Joe obtained his B.S. in Architectural Engineering from UNM in 1953. After serving as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force from 1953-1955 in Korea, he earned his Bachelor’s of Architecture from UNM in 1961. He was a proud UNM Alumni president in 1969. Joe loved being an architect and was chairman of Boehning Partnership, Inc. and in May 1989 was advanced to the American Institute of Architects College of Fellows, one of the highest honors bestowed on its members by the AIA. He enjoyed playing tennis as a longtime member of the Tennis Club of Albuquerque; enjoyed watching USC win at football, and the Dodgers play baseball. Joe was thrilled that “the Pit” was picked as one of the World’s Top-20 venues of the 20th Century by Sports Illustrated, June 7, 1999, but most of all he was happy to be able to see “the Pit” celebrate its 50 year anniversary this month. Joe is survived by Cyndy, his partner of 31 years; his children: Joanne, Paula, Dave, and Nick; 5 grandchildren. At his request, there will be no service. He will remain forever in the hearts and memories of those who knew him. To all that helped Joe recently, thanks for your kindness and support.
