Julius Duran, a resident of Bernalillo, NM died on February 20, 2025. He was born in Friona, Texas on December 20th, 1933 to Alfredo and Virginia Duran and raised in Tucumcari, NM.
He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Donna Duran, and 4 children: Anna Rice (Joe), Michelle Himbarger (Jim), Marcos Duran and Jennifer Duran. He is also survived by his sister, Alice Guerin, 4 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild, many nieces and nephews, cousins, friends and extended family. Julius's family moved to Albuquerque when he was about 15 years old. He graduated from St. Mary's high school and earned his degree in education from the old St. Joseph's College, followed by a degree in spanish from the University of Guadalajara, Mexico. He taught and was in administration for a total of 34 years. He retired from Albuquerque High school. Everyone who knew Julius will remember him for his "tell it like it is attitude." He never minced his words! He was gruff by nature: but as they say, "penetrate a gruff exterior and you find him affable." If you got to know him, he was very funny and witty; very generous and fair, and a darn hard worker, always helping everyone. Julius was a very generous and fair, and a darn hard worker, always helping everyone. Julius was a very prayerful person, and very devoted to his "friend" St. Joseph. He was a Third Order Carmelite for 71 years, and the longest professed Carmelite in the Archdiocese; having been professed in 1954. he was given the religious name of Brother Andre. Many were drawn to him for counseling because of the faith and wisdom he showed. He will truly be missed by his family, friends, neighbors, and past students. A rosary will be recited at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Bernalillo, NM on Thursday at 10:30, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial. The Committal Service will be at Gate of Heaven Cemetery on Wyoming Blvd., followed by a reception at Our Lady Sorrows Social Center. Pallbearers will be Abel Anaya, Bruce Bogard, Ray Pick, Keith Matson, Richard Ortiz and Felix Silva III.
