Benner, Karen Galloway
Karen was a good hearted person who truly loved helping others. That is why she put in many years as a medical assistant taking care of people who couldn't take care of themselves. Somehow in all that work and daily chaos she found time to be a good mother to her son Steven and a loving wife to her husband Mark.
Her caring nature showed in many ways, one day when Steven was a toddler he got a piece of candy stuck in his throat while she was driving him to daycare. She immediately recognized he was in trouble and stopped the car and did the Heimlich maneuver. She later shared with Mark how scared she was. Ten years later at the dinner table she did the same thing for Mark and he shared how scared he was. Her brother Niels told stories that when they were kids, Karen would put herself between him and their parents to protect her big brother. How many little sisters would just throw their big brother under the bus?
Karen had another passion and that was playing the cello. Her dad also played the cello and they shared a love for its sorrowful, soulful sound, which is pleasing to the ear and heart. I’m sure if heaven has an orchestra that needs a cello, she would somehow want to be involved. Maybe the only instrument we need in heaven is our heart and voice. Karen got to travel to Europe to play in the Youth Symphony when she was in high school. Her brother Erik also got to travel with her as an equipment manager. He remembers that experience and how great it was to share the sites of Europe with his sister.
Though Karen struggled with pain in her later years we can take great comfort that she is no longer suffering and is with her loved ones that have gone before her. Karen, thanks for bringing a warm smile to our hearts. We will all miss you dearly and may you continue to smile from above.
