The Lord, taken to Eternal Life, and passing away, embraced Katie, Age 91, beloved and devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, peacefully on Saturday, March 26, 2016. She was the youngest of four children born to Electo and Erinea (Chavez) Estrada, on February 22,1925  in Carthage, NM. Moving as a young child to Guadalajara, NM, then to San Pedro, NM.  Ultimately she became a life-long resident of Socorro, NM. She graduated from Socorro High School. She met the love of her life, Frutoso Lopez, while he was a teacher in San Pedro prior to WWII. During WWII they continuously wrote to each other. When the WWII ended, they married on December 19,1945.  They began their married life in Las Vegas, NM. Their first son Pete was born in Las Vegas. After Frutoso obtained his degree, they moved to El Rito, where Frutoso became a faculty member and high school basketball coach at the El Rito boarding school. Katie volunteered with the school activities, chaperoning school dances and traveling with the students to out of town games. They had their second son , Jimmy, born in near by Dixon, NM. Ultimately, Katie and Frutoso moved back to Socorro. Their third son, Ronnie, was born in Socorro. Katie began working as a waitress at the Coronado Cafe on California Street. After several years, she started working at Safeway Grocery Store, the store first being located on California Street, then moving to the plaza. Her Safeway colleagues became her second family. She retired after 25 years, cherishing her memories of all who worked along side her. Katie was a devoted catholic and a member of the Old San Miguel Mission. She also enjoyed crocheting and cooking. She loved her family, her brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews, her fellow Safeway Employees and all her friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frutoso; her sons, Pete and Jimmy; her parents, Electo and Erinea Estada; her brothers, Esmael Estrada and Anastacio Estrada; and her sister Elisa Arvizu. She is survived by her son, Ron; daughter-in-law, Peggy; grandchildren, Kathryn Lopez, Jennifer Lopez and Amanda Lopez; her great-grandchildren, Christian Lopez, Calista Marisol Lopez, Fernando Torres and Gabriel Lopez. Visitation will take place Thursday, March 31, 2016, from 12:00 pm-8:00 pm at  Daniels Family Funeral Services - Socorro Chapel, 309 Garfield St, Socorro. The Holy Rosary to be recited on Friday, April 1, 2016, at 8:30 am at San Miguel Catholic Church, 403 El Camino Real, Socorro with the Mass of Resurrection to follow at 9:00 am with  Father John Anasiudu as Celebrant. Katie will be laid to rest near her husband and two sons at San Miguel Catholic Cemetery  following service. Pallbearers will be Gabriel Luna, Pedro Valdez, Christian Lopez, Ric Tafoya, Ernest Arvizu and Martin Arvizu.  Honorary pallbearers are Calista Marisol Lopez, Fernando Torres, Joseph Garcia, Nick Romero, Luis Arvizu Jr. and Paul Torres. The family would like to thank all those who offered their prayers and expressed their condolences and also Dr. Bhasker, the Heart Hospital and Gentiva Hospice for all the love and care they showed Katie and her family.
