Leburt Saulsberry, Sr

Leburt Fred Saulsberry was born in Tucumcari, NM on November 15, 1944 to Fred and Lois Saulsberry. He grew up on his family’s ranch west of Datil. Leburt attended grade school in Datil, and then graduated high school from Magdalena in 1962. While growing up, he was an active member in 4-H and showed steers. After graduating high school, he attended New Mexico State University in Las Cruses, majoring and graduating with a degree in Animal Science, as well as Ag Business. Throughout his college career, he was on the Dean’s list, as well as a member of the rodeo team. While on the rodeo team, he competed in steer wrestling and calf roping, winning multiple awards, including saddles and buckles. During his college career, he won the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Finals in steer wrestling and calf roping. He also served in the National Guard. Leburt then married Linda Major in 1971. They had two children, Sandra and Lee Saulsberry. In 1972, they bought the Council Rock Ranch in Magdalena, where they raised their kids and lived for 30 years, then sold their ranch. Throughout this time, he continued rodeoing, and served on the Magdalena School Board for 17 years. In 1997, Leburt started driving a semi-truck for Stevens Transport, and did so for 13 years. He was the first driver to reach two million miles at the company. After retiring from Stevens Transport, he lived in both Magdalena and Datil, where he enjoyed his country life. In 2016, he moved to the Good Samaritan Society in Socorro, where he went home to be with the Lord on January 16, 2020. Leburt is preceded in death by his father, Fred Saulsberry, his mother, Lois Saulsberry, and his stepmother, Lalah Green Saulsberry. He is survived by his brother, Wayne Saulsberry, and wife Kate, and his children, Sandra Saulsberry and Lee Saulsberry, and wife Shelby. Leburt’s grandchildren are Alexandria Holman, Rebecka Holman-Hagelbarger, and husband Ryan, Kymberlee Holman, Kenzie Silva, Trevor Saulsberry, and Payten Saulsberry. Services will be held at 10:00am on Saturday, February 8, 2020 at the Magdalena School Fine Arts Center. A luncheon to celebrate Leburt’s life will be provided following the memorial service. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Alzheimer’s Association in loving memory of Leburt would be greatly appreciated.
