LeRoy Vernon Powell

POWELL- LeRoy Vernon Powell, 86, of Albuquerque went home to be with his Lord on Friday, February 16, 2011. He was born May 6, 1924 to the late Lester Powell and Laurel G. Powell in Toledo, Ohio. LeRoy was a highly decorated U.S. Army veteran rising to the rank of Major before his retirement. He then worked as a compliance officer with the U.S. Department of Labor. LeRoy was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Kenneth Powell; his loving wife, Dorothea Louise Powell; sister, Irene Powell Hackney. LeRoy is survived by his daughter, Paula Louise Sawyer, of Albuquerque; son, William Washington of MA; niece Jacqueline E. Thomas; four granddaughters, Sandra M. Teixeira and Laura D. Sawyer of Albuquerque, Debra A. Jonfelix and husband, Gerard of Providence, RI, Valerie M. Sawyer of Phoenix, AZ; great-grandchildren, James D. and Angie Schaffer, Monica Sawyer, Justin Luna, Anthony Sawyer, Kelly Cole, Julien Jonfelix, Stephanie Cole, Brianna Jonfelix, Alicia Sawyer, Samarah Jonfelix and Danielle Sawyer; great-great-grandchildren, Kassilyn Sawyer, Madison Schaffer, and Blake Sawyer. Visitation will be from 6:00 pm " 8:00 pm, Thursday, February 24, 2011 at Daniels Family Funeral Services (1100 Coal Ave. SE). Funeral Services will be at 10:00 am, Saturday at Grant Chapel, 7920 Claremont Ave. NE with Rev. Jesse D. Dompreh officiating. Interment will be 1:00 pm, Monday, February 24, 2011 at Santa Fe National Cemetery.
