Lila Jane Stanwood

Lila Jane Stanwood  passed away October eleventh.  Born on August 26, 1921, to Alexander and Zella Lockhart in Waterloo, Iowa, but spent most of her youth  in southern California.  She was married three times over her 97 years and outlived all three husbands.    She was married to Air Force Major Richard Cale for over 25 years.  They had two children:  Cheryle and Douglas.  As a military wife, she lived all over the United States, as well as in Germany and Japan.  While in Nebraska, she took up painting, a hobby she pursued for over forty years. She painted many framed pieces of art and also painted stage murals for many church productions over the years.   She took up flower arranging while in Japan, a skill she used in making arrangements for groups through the years.  Also, during her years as a military wife, she edited the newsletters published by various women’s groups on the military bases—a skill that would serve her well later in life.

Jane’s second husband was Weldon Thompson.  They were only married for only six months until he died of a heart attack.  Her third husband was Earle Stanwood.  They were married for over 25 years until his death in 2001.  Jane then moved from California to live with Cheryle’s family in Albuquerque.  It was here that she took up writing children’s books such as Squeak’s Bus Company, as well as several religious books.

Jane was predeceased by her parents, her brother Mike and her sister Bea.  She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, artist and author.  In addition to her children Cheryle and Douglas, she is survived by 5 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held November 6, 2018 at 3:00 p.m. at the Daniels Family Funeral Home at 7601 Wyoming Blvd, NM 87109.  A reception will follow at the Daniels Family Reception Room at the same address.
