Llewellyn Jones

November 14, 1919 — June 7, 2014

Jones, Llewellyn Hosford Beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Llewellyn Hosford Jones passed away on Saturday, June 7, 2014, at his home in Albuquerque. He was 94. Llew was born in Oberlin, Ohio on November 14, 1919. He spent most of his youth in Buffalo, New York. In 1942, he received a Bachelors degree in Chemical Engineering at the University of Michigan. In September of 1943 Llew volunteered for the draft and spent 28 months in the South Pacific. After the war, Llew attended the University of Buffalo where he received a Masters Degree in Physical Chemistry. While at the University of Buffalo, he met and fell in love with Jean Schuster. They were married in 1948. Llew received his PhD in Physical Chemistry from Cal Tech in 1950 under the tutelage of Richard Badger, a towering figure in the field of vibrational spectroscopy. After a brief postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Rochester, Llew joined a group of young chemists at Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory (now LANL) that formed the nucleus of what became, at the time, one of the strongest Inorganic Chemistry groups in the world (INC-4). Llew and wife, Jean, remained in Los Alamos until 2013, when they moved to Albuquerque to be near three of their daughters. Aside from his scientific work, Llew loved the outdoors. He loved to hike, camp, ski, and play tennis and golf. Climbing mountains was his passion and his favorite mountains were the Truchas Peaks. He also liked to repair cars and various other malfunctioning machines. He was a great punster and loved plays on words. He enjoyed playing Scrabble and solving the daily cryptoquip. Llew was a man of many talents and he was made a Fellow at LANL. He mentored a number of successful scientists including three that went on to become Laboratory Fellows. But he was a modest man who never boasted of his achievements; he preferred to poke fun at himself. He was always there for his family and will be greatly missed. He is survived by his wife, Jean; his son, David and wife Dawn; and his four daughters Barbara Trujillo and partner Basil Swanson; Susan Jones; Cindy Jones; and Fran Jones-Lory and husband, Jay Lory. He is also survived by eight grand children: Michelle Trujillo, Jason Jones, Phil Jones, Lupe Ruiz-Jones, Nanda Ruiz-Jones, George Ruiz-Jones, Maria Lory, Richard Lory, and one great-grandchild, Blake Jones. Llew was predeceased by his parents, Ed and Frances Jones, and his two brothers, Dick and Ned. A private memorial will be held in the Jemez Mountains. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made a favorite charity.
