Lorene Adell Lukes

April 8, 1925 — February 21, 2013

Lukes, Lorene Adell Lorene Adel Lukes (Dell) died Thursday morning, February 21, 2013, at age 87. Born in Canton, Texas to cotton farmers, Dell grew to be a woman of rare fortitude and resourcefulness. She married Lieutenant Francis T. Lukes in 1943 at age 18 and, with Frank, raised five children. They moved to New York after they were married and from there, to numerous army bases throughout the United States, including Hawaii. They settled in Albuquerque in 1964, shortly before Frank retired from the army. Del was best known for her home cooking, which drew many to her table on a regular basis. Friends and family came to mark the seasons by Dells cooking. Autumn wouldnt be autumn without Dells homemade sauerkraut or her pot roast with braised red cabbage and caraway-seed dumplings. Winter wouldnt be as warm without her hearty soups and stews, and summer wouldnt be summer without her vinegar-mustard deviled eggs, pungent German potato salad, lime-dressed coleslaw, and key-lime pie. When Dell wasnt cooking, she occupied herself gardening, working as a school crossing guard, praying the rosary, attending daily Mass, and serving as a member of the Marionites and Womens Guild at Our Lady of Annunciation Parish. Ever devoted to her husband, she became his sole caregiver during his long struggle with Alzheimers disease. In recent years, Dell also enjoyed spending time with her friends at the New Heart Exercise Clinic. Predeceased by her husband and her sister, Christine, Dell is survived by her two brothers, Pete and Phil Rogers, her daughter, Frances Haughom of Eugene, Oregon; her four sons, Michael, Tom, Peter, and Paul, all of Albuquerque; 10 grandchildren: Thomas Poth of Albuquerque; Lieutenant Colonel Patrick Lukes of Federick, Maryland; Christopher Haughom of Eugene, Oregon; Dr. Bryan Haughom of Chicago, Illinois; Matthew Haughom of Los Angeles, California; Michael Bortnik of Palo Alto, California, Greg Lukes of Livermore, California; Matthew Lukes of Boise, Idaho; and Rachel, Alex and Sophie Lukes, all of Albuquerque; 7 great-grandchildren: Addison, Kestril, Tory, Taylor, Tatiana, and Terra Poth; Ella and Mia Bortnik, and Claire and Simone Lukes. The family invites friends to join them for the Rosary being recited as part of Our Lady of Annunciations Parish Lenten Mission, on Tuesday, February 26, 2013 at 6:30 p.m. Mass of Resurrection will take place on Wednesday, February 27, 2013 at 8:30 a.m. also at Our Lady of Annunciation Parish, 2621 Vermont, NE, 87110. Interment will be on Thursday, February 28, 2013 at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe at 2:15 p.m. The family requests memorial contributions to be sent to the Our Lady of Annunciation Chapter of the St. Vincent DePaul Society, 2532 Vermont, NE, Albuquerque, NM, 87110.
