Malcolm "Buddy" Major

Major, Malcolm "Buddy" Age 92, of Los Lunas, NM passed away Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at Princeton Place Nursing Home in Albuquerque, NM. He was born in Socorro, NM on November 9, 1921, to Malcolm and Lily Field Major. He was a lifetime rancher and ranched in Montana, Colorado and New Mexico. He lived most of his life in New Mexico where he had several ranches over his life time. He was a cattle trader for many years and bought cattle from ranchers all over New Mexico and western Arizona. In the late 1950's through the 1970's, Magdalena, NM would come alive in the fall because of his cattle trading. The town would be buzzing with the stock yards full of bawling cattle, trains coming and going, trucks and truck drivers, ranchers, cowboys and cattle buyers. It was a very exciting time. Buddy loved the land, cattle and horses. Even at the age of 92 he was still gathering cattle on his four wheeler. He loved to go to the Cattleman's Livestock auction just to watch the cattle. He had served on the Magdalena School Board, the New Mexico Racing Commission and the New Mexico State Fair Board and had been a Socorro County Commissioner. He was preceded in death by his parents: his wife of 31 years, Helen Hobbs Major; sisters, Gina Dixon and Alyce Zancinilli; and brother, Duncan Major. Buddy is survived by daughters, Linda Major, Gail Major and Beverly Major; sons, Stuart Major and his wife, Pat, Mike Major and wife, Holly, Randell Major and wife, Lyn; sisters, Helen Graham, Marie Major, and JoAnn Major; brother, Kenneth Major; 18 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren; as well as many extended relatives. Services will be held on Saturday, April 26, 2014, 10:00 am, at the Magdalena High School Gymnasium in Magdalena, NM. Interment to follow at Magdalena Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Lee Saulsberry, Brandon Major, Field Major, Austin Major, Lane Major, Matt Major.
