Margaret Goens

August 2, 1920 — October 16, 2013

Goens, Ada Margaret Ada Marguerite-Margaret Goens, age 93, passed away peacefully at home on October 16, 2013. Margaret was born on August 2, 1920 in Dewey, Oklahoma to George and Nettie Miller. A mistake was made in the spelling of her middle name on the birth certificate. It was recorded as Margaret instead of Marguerite as her mother had chosen. Margarets young life began with a tragic start, as her mother had tuberculosis. Therapy at the time was to reside in cool dry air, so, a decision was made to move to Colorado. Only 18 days old, Margarets mother died on the train near Garden City, Kansas. Margaret and her father returned to Dewey, where Nettie was buried. Margarets grandmother helped out with her raising as best she could. Unable to get help from her fathers family, Margaret and her father moved to Muhlenberg County, Kentucky. Muhlenberg County was the family home of Margarets mother. For three years her father worked in the coal mines and Margaret was cared for by Netties family. When Margaret was four years old, problems with her mothers family led to another move. Margaret and her father moved back to Oklahoma which was in the midst of the 1920s oil boom. The boom town of Three Sands in Oklahoma was where Margaret and her father settled. He worked in the oil fields of Oklahoma and southeastern Kansas. At age seven Margarets father remarried. Margarets step mother, Maud, had an important and lasting influence in her life. Maud, being an excellent seamstress, taught her to sew along with homemaking skills. Margarets life in her preteen and teen years was happy and typical for the time. Although the depression of the 1930s affected the familys daily life, her father was able to keep his job in the oil fields. Gardening and canning helped out as well. As the depression began to soften in the late 1930s, music and dancing became a key part of Margarets life. On stage at a dance one night, a handsome young guitar player/lead singer caught her eye. The band, known as The Flint Hill Boys toured throughout central Oklahoma. A year later, their paths crossed again at a local dance. Margaret wasted little time in making her feelings known. The first date turned into a two week courtship which then blossomed into a passionate love affair. On January 1st 1939 in Tonkawa, Oklahoma, with family and friends present, Dale and Margaret married. Three children were born of that sixty-six year union, Jerry, in June 1940 in Enid Ok; David, in March 1942 in Kansas City, MO and Linda, in January 1954 in Albuquerque, NM. Margarets husband Dale continued his musical carrier until the outbreak of World War II. During the war years Dale worked at North Aviation in Kansas City, Kansas building B-25 airplanes. Dale was given deferments and did not get called into service. After the end of the war and a couple of moves, the family relocated to Albuquerque, New Mexico in August of 1949. After a brief stay in Albuquerque, they moved to Cedar Crest, NM. Dale got a job at Sandia Base, where he worked for twenty plus years. Upon retiring he started his own custom gunstock business which became very successful. Margaret was a wonderful cook and beautiful seamstress, making not only her clothes, but the childrens as well. In later years, Margaret felt typing was a skill she wanted to learn. Dale purchased a typewriter and she took classes. At times, she felt like it had gotten the better of her, but she persevered and finally got to a level she was happy with. During the late 1990s, Margaret became interested in computers. One was purchased and with the familys help, she learned to use it. Margaret also spent time volunteering at the Arthritis Foundation where she was given an award for outstanding service which hangs proudly next to an award given to her husband. Margaret resided at the family home in Cedar Crest for sixty-four years. She was preceded in death by her parents, George Jackson and Nettie Jane Miller; step mother, Maud Miller; husband, Dale Wesley; and son, David Wesley Goens. Margaret is survived by her son, Jerry and wife Susan of Albuquerque; daughter, Linda and husband Rob Nezzer of Cedar Crest, and daughter-in-law, Donna Diane Goens of Missoula, MT. She was blessed with five grandchildren; four great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. The family wishes to extend gratitude and heartfelt thanks to the staff at Heartland Hospice, especially Evelyn Montoya, RN whose love and compassion made this journey easier. To Steve Richards, the spent time with her conversing and playing rummy was invaluable.
