There are people in this world who make it their personal mission in life to bring love and joy to everyone they meet. Margaret “Margie” was one of those people who went out of her way to make you feel special and made sure you knew she was thinking and praying for you. Everywhere she went, she carried her rosary and a beautiful smile, looking for anyone to pray for. She was always dressed to the nines and you would never catch her without her hair or make up done. She was known for her fierce faith in the Lord and there was nothing she wouldn’t pray for, whether it was a special occasion like a birthday or her favorite sports team winning a game.
Margie’s passion and stubbornness was part of her soul from the moment she was born. She was born to Manuel and Felicita (Mares) Sisneros on November 29, 1933 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She was a life-long resident in the North Valley with her sister Della (Thornton). She never played sports but you would never know it from her passion and competitiveness in how she followed every sport. Baseball, basketball, volleyball, football and boxing, she would get so excited to watch and cheer for her favorite teams and players. She was a proud Albuquerque High alum and she was so excited to work at the same high school she graduated from. She often talked about her students and all the fun she had while working there. She was proud to attend the University of New Mexico while she worked towards earning her education degree.
While swimming with friends she met her love of her life and husband, Herman L. Maestas. He filled her moccasins with dirt and cigarette butts to get her attention. In their everlasting union of 45 years, they welcomed three beautiful sons into the world despite losing her son Marlo at birth. She was so proud of her sons and sacrificed a great extent to help them achieve their dreams. She would never let anybody talk ill of her sons, Walter and Ken. Even their wives Esther and Trish could never say anything bad about them. She attended all of their games and kept every newspaper clipping of the both of them. Her family always came first no matter what. She loved staying up late watching the family play dominoes and card games and would even try to cheat for her sons. Margie lost the love of her life in 1999, but will once again be together.
She was blessed with six grandchildren: Fabian Maestas and wife Marianne, Mariah Martinez and husband Michael, Marcus Maestas and Shay Moore (son Joziah), and Alyssa Maestas. She also adored her five great grandchildren: Izabella, Colin, Gavin, Michael, and Maya who she cared deeply about. She wanted to spend every minute with her grandchildren and would visit as often as she could. Every time they would call, she would be so thrilled to talk and tell them how much she missed them and was praying for them.
Margie talked to her sister Della until the very end even though she lived across the country in Atlanta, Georgia. She also had many nieces and nephews that reside in Georgia. She loved and always kept in touch with her daughter-in-law Maria Elena Maestas. She was a very loyal and loving friend to many. You could barely get ahold of her on the phone because she was always talking to her friends and family.
Margie had a fierce faith in the Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. With that faith, she approached every trial and tribulation in her life with the desire of the Lord’s protection. Margie was a devout Catholic and parishioner of St. Therese of the Little Flower and Our Lady of Guadalupe Church for many years. She was loyal to a fault and would keep anyone’s secret no matter how big or small. She always rooted for the underdog. She loved to follow her favorite sports teams, was involved in local politics, traveled the world with her family. She enjoyed volunteering with the Hispano Chamber of Commerce and did so for many years. She had profound family values and was a very loyal and loving friend to many. She will be deeply missed by friends, family, and all who were blessed to be part of her life.
