Maria Aurelia Cannon

Maria Cannon, age 97, passed away peacefully on January 2, 2025 after a brief illness. She was born on June 21, 1927 to Frederico and Julia Trujillo in Des Moines, New Mexico.  

Maria was blessed with eight siblings and is survived by Fred (Barbara) Trujillo of Albuquerque and Emma (Don) Koblischke of Denver. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Thomas Cannon; and siblings, Ramon Trujillo, Marcelina Whitman, Mollie Ulibarri, Juan Trujillo, Tony Trujillo, and Cecilia Bachicha. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.  

Maria spent much of her adult life in California and moved back to her native New Mexico after the passing of her husband. She spent her remaining years living independently in Rio Rancho. 

Maria was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Parish where she participated in the Altar Rosary Society.  

Maria was always fiercely independent and lived alone until the time of her death. Her nephews and nieces enjoyed listening to her stories about her life and family. Her sharp memory allowed her to remember specific dates and places. She enjoyed making panocha during lent and pink squirrels, her signature drink, for family gatherings. 

During her long and blessed life she encountered difficulties and many joys. Her secret to a long life was enjoying a donut and coffee every morning for breakfast. We are excited to continue her tradition.
