Maria Agnes Lewis

May 11, 1934 — December 15, 2019

Maria Agnes “Madeleine” Lewis, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, passed away on Sunday, December 15th, 2019 at the age of 85.  Madeleine was born in Heerlen, the Netherlands, on May 11, 1934 to Pieter and Elisabeth Lenders.

Despite the uncertainty brought about by the direct impact of World War II on her childhood, she always remained optimistic and focused on achieving her goals. In 1954 and 1955, she attended Immaculata College and University of Heidelberg, earning degrees in both Education and the German language.  She was fluent in languages and had a passion for education.  Madeleine was a dedicated elementary schoolteacher for more than 10 years.

In 1968, she married and subsequently had two daughters. She was a devoted wife and mother, and devout Catholic. Madeleine loved the arts and music.  She sang in church choirs throughout her life, and often went to the symphony with friends.  An avid reader from a young age, Madeleine could get lost in a book for hours.  More than once, she mentioned that growing up, she would read the encyclopedia for enjoyment.  She was always curious, valued learning, and was an active participant in adult education classes for many years.

Madeleine is preceded in death by her parents, and brother, Hub Lenders. She is survived by her husband, Tom, her sisters, Ans Olander and Truus Leis, her daughters, Sharon and Valerie, and her cherished grandchildren, Madison, Luke, Ryan, Elaina, and Noah.

Before retiring in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Madeleine called many places home, including Germany, Denver, Shreveport, Mountain View, and Austin.  She never met a stranger, building new and special friendships easily at each destination. She was friendly, outgoing, caring and loved to be around people.

A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, January 20, 2019, 11:00 a.m., in Daniels Family Funeral Services - Wyoming Chapel, 7601 Wyoming Blvd NE.  Graveside service to follow at 12:15 p.m. in Sandia Memory Gardens, 9500 San Pedro Dr NE.

Young Madeline

As the bombers flew over Netherlands skies,

And the war ground on, drowning victims cries,

Young Madeline grew a strong outer shell,

For she'd already seen a glimpse of Hell.

When the word went out - The planes are coming,

And she'd hear the sound of engines drumming,

Off to the cellar – and she'd bring a book,

While dad and brother went outside to look.

Soon the Yanks arrived and won the great war;

Then helped to heal Holland's lingering sore.

Young Madeline chose a Yankee to love,

Soon blessed by two girls - blessed by God above.

Then to Yankee Land and a bountiful life,

As mother and grandma - dutiful wife;

Lifelong devotion to the Catholic Church,

Where you'd hear sing from the choir perch.

Young Madeline now is no longer young,

The prayers recited - the hymns that were sung;

Helped pave the path to a far distant land,

Where I'm sure she'll sing in an Angel Band.

But she will be missed by Tom and her girls,

And by family and friends as her flag of life furls.

– Bob & Ans Olander
