Maria Lucianita "Lucy" (Heiss) Pino

April 19, 1934 — January 14, 2015

Pino , Maria  Lucianita
Lucy Pino (Heiss)  April 19, 1934-January 14, 2015
Lucy Pino was born and died in the tiny mountain village of Magdalena, New Mexico, the second of five children born to her parents, Lorenzo Pino and Amelia Armijo. Her brother Eddie and sister Dannie have already passed on, and she is survived by her sister, Mary Rose Pino and brother and sister-in-law, Arthur and Darlene Pino, four daughters, nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, and numerous cousins.
Her family arrived in New Mexico 400 years ago, and so she was born surrounded by numerous eagle-eyed cousins, aunts, uncles as the saying is “todos somos primos” due to the many marriages between the Spanish, Italian, and Native Americans of colonial New Spain.  Lucy was determined to escape for freedom, and was one of the first women (age 16) enrolled at the NM School of Mines in Socorro, where she met and married her husband Elwood David Heiss, Jr.. They moved all over as he was a mining engineer, and so she lived in Chile, and all over Southern California. Her first child and only son, David Heiss, was born in Chile and has passed on. She raised her children in Borrego Springs (1960-1968), Santa Paula (1968-72), and Santa Barbara (1972-1992).
Lucy Pino (Heiss) lived in Santa Barbara during the busiest and happiest years of her active life, raising her family and building her career. Lucy attended  UCSB receiving her B.A. and Masters Degree in Law and Society. She was employed as Juvenile Probation Officer for the SB County Probation Department before leaving to create her own business, Pino Vocational Rehabilitation Services. After leaving California and “retiring” to her hometown, she became certified by the State of New Mexico as a librarian, building a better library in order to better serve the community in which she lived as well as serving as Justice of the Peace. Those who knew her knew she was a force to be reckoned with,  a woman who always lived life on her own terms. She was fierce, intelligent, beautiful, physically strong, and forever active. She was a political activist, an artist, an intellectual and would always give you anything she had because she thought she already had more than she needed. She was an avid reader and a lifelong library supporter, a true lover of life.
She died suddenly at her home in Magdalena and is survived by her loving daughters, Nicole, Stephanie, Adrienne, and Natalie, as well as nine loving grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; all are grieving deeply. Lucy was an amazing woman who touched many lives and will be greatly missed by those who knew her.  Please contact us at workingoffsite@yahoo.com   if you have any Lucy stories to tell us.
A celebration of her life will be held in Magdalena, New Mexico on January 24, 2014.
