Marilyn Hutchins French On Saturday morning November 16, 2013, surrounded by her loving nurses and caregivers at Good Samaritan Society in Socorro, an angel unaware won her wings and sped away totally healed after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimers. Alzheimers can no longer erase your memories, tap dance on your dignity or determine your destiny! Marilyn was born to John Maurice and Sarah Elizabeth Crossely Hutchins on January 17, 1932. Marilyn arrived at a cabin on Monkey Island (named for her mother) on the Grand Lake of the Cherokees in Northeastern Oklahoma. Her childhood home and the Blackjack Oak tree that shaded the cabin are now the number 9 green of the Shangri La Golf Resort. Marilyn grew up fishing and riding her Morgan mare Blackie. The Hutchins family left Oklahoma during the Depression and traveled to Silver City where her father took a mining job at Luck Mine. The family traveled over the Black Range, a one lane dirt track at the time. Marilyn spent the next 75 years of her life in Silver City. She graduated from Teachers High School, attended WNMU for a year and transferred to the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. She played field hockey and was the center on the basketball team while earning her degree in teaching. On July 25, 1953 Marilyn was joined in Holy Matrimony to Wilber Dean French Jr. at the Methodist Church in Silver City. Both coaches and teachers, they were married for 55 years. Together they enjoyed the great out of doors, hunting, fishing, camping, gardening, the sporting activities of their children and family events.
