On Tuesday January 21, 2020, Marilyn VanPatter entered peacefully into the Kingdom of God. She was a Christian who praised the Lord to her final breath. Marilyn was born in Boone County, Iowa, May 29, 1935 to parents Royal John and Zelphia Alexander who proceeded her in death. She was one of 9 children and the youngest girl. Also proceeded by her in death were; husbands, Richard Myers and Bud VanPatter, five siblings, Dean Alexander, Colleen Jensen, Carroll Alexander, Ruby Frangos, Bill Alexander, and her stepson, David VanPatter. She is survived by two brothers, Ronnie Alexander (TaeSan) of Huntsville, AL and Jerry Alexander (Mattie)of Putna Gorda, FL. Marilyn leaves behind three daughters, Carolyn (Charlie) Friederich of Amarillo, TX, Pat Coburn (Steve) of Yuma, AZ and Kathy Myers of Springfield, MO., as well as four stepchildren, Pam Montag, Margo (Al) Lovig and Chuck (Patty) VanPatter. Marilyn was a devoted grandmother to; Kirsten (John) Adams, Melissa (Ray) Crumby, Matt (Robyn) Friederich, Heather (Ernesto) Santos, Ben (Heather) Myers, four step-grandchildren, Chris (Deb) Coburn, Erica Coburn, Angela VanPatter, and Brenda (Joe) Fisher. She was also blessed with many great grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Born in Boone County, Iowa, Marilyn resided and worked in Ames, Iowa until 2012. She then spent her later years in Texas, Arizona and New Mexico. Marilyn graduated from Ames High School in 1953 and was a proud Ames alumnus. She was most known for her years of selfless service as a nurse. She graduated from DMACC in 1972 with her LPN degree. Her career was spent at Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames, IA until retirement from nursing in 1994. Marilyn found great joy in helping others. Some of Marilyn’s passions were spending as much time as she could with her beloved family, camping, traveling, crocheting, her love for music and service to her church. Marilyn’s faith was strong and could often be heard quoting scripture from memory. She was loved by many and will be greatly missed.
