Mark’s Remembrance

Mark Harvold was welcomed to the world on a warm and sunny northwest afternoon by his parents, Nancy and Herman, and his sisters, Mary and Sharon. June 23, 1968 was a remarkable day for the Harvold’s who were thrilled to have a baby boy join their family in the small town of Carnation, Washington. Mark grew up with his family in a green farmhouse, with a rustic tree house in the back yard, and fields of berries ripe for harvest during the summertime. This northwest farming landscape, where the seasons shift the sky from blue to grey and where rural and urban meet, would influence Mark as an architect later in his life.

During his childhood, Mark had an aspiring interest in building things. He liked to make symmetrically designed castles from wooden building blocks and Legos and practice his carpentry skills by hammering nails into the wooden planks of the tree house. He seemed born with a sense for dressing well and was often seen wearing a tie even when there was no occasion for it. As a young teenager, Mark sought adventure with friends, exploring logging roads in the forest, getting into hairy situations while riding motorcycles with his friend Gunner, and camping out on a hill behind the green farmhouse during the summer with his friends David and Joel.

After graduating from Tolt High School in 1986, Mark moved to Seattle and worked at the historic Alexis Hotel for more than 5 years. He reveled in parking the fast cars of wealthy patrons, an exciting part of his job that helped him to learn parallel parking. During his time at the hotel, he met many musicians and actors like REM and Jeff Bridges and once shared an elevator ride with Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love.

Drawn to the ancient culture and landscape of the southwest, Mark moved from Seattle to New Mexico to pursue a career in architecture. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture in 2001 and a Master of Architecture in 2004 from the University of New Mexico. As a new architect, Mark worked some years with Eden Landscapes and Design Plus and in 2005, he found his professional home with Jon Anderson Architecture in Albuquerque.  At the time of his passing, Mark was an associate architect and had led the design and management of a series of residential, commercial and institutional projects. He was very proud of and most grateful for his experience as project manager of the Georgia O’Keefe Elementary School, a project that won an AIA Albuquerque Merit Award.

In the winter of 2007, Mark met Kathleen Dallin, impressing her with the grey velvet jacket he wore on their first date at a French restaurant in Nob Hill. At the end of their date, he invited her to take a trip to Santa Fe the next day. It became the first of many trips they would take together throughout New Mexico over the next ten years. On May 21, 2010, Mark and Kathleen were married in a small ceremony at the Hotel Andaluz in Albuquerque. They were very happy to welcome the birth of their daughter, Madeleine Mae Harvold, on March 17, 2011. Mark was a quiet and gentle father, who loved reading to Madeleine every evening. As a family, they enjoyed visiting Abiquiu, going to local hot springs, driving through Albuquerque and Corrales looking at houses, and seeing musicians like Seal and Chris Isaac at the Sandia Amphitheater. When at home, Mark enjoyed relaxing with his family, working in the yard, and using his talents to complete home projects with care and accuracy. One of his last projects, which he called the “Jewel Box,” was a beautiful chicken coop/storage building made from recycled materials and wood siding with a charcoal finish Mark did himself using a Japanese tradition of charring wood.

When Mark learned of his Stage IV cancer diagnosis in the spring of 2016, he was very hopeful, but also realistic and met each challenge that came up over the next year with acceptance, dignity and courage. During his last months and weeks, Mark spent a lot of time with loved friends and family. He enjoyed watching old Heart music videos and introducing some of his favorite music, like New Order and Roxy Music, to his daughter. He was comforted by being home with his family and sitting outside on the back porch to look out at the Sandia Mountains. In the early morning of June 14, 2017, Mark passed with the rising sun in the presence of his wife, daughter and mother.
