Martha F. Bender

Martha F. Bender passed away on March 4, 2018. She was born August 1, 1916 to Ruth and Charles Fichter in Mansfield Ohio.  She lived a life well-played from the first hole to the 18th hole. Martie was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Robert, and her husband George in 1992.

She attended University of Alabama and was affiliated with Phi Mu Sorority. She married George Henry Bender in 1939. Martie and family moved to Albuquerque in 1948. Martie was an Active member of the 4 Hills Country Club and PEO Chapter AA.

After losing her sight, she moved from her home in Towne Park in 1996 to Bear Canyon Retirement Home (while it was still being built!) She lived there for over 20 years. An illness in 2016 brought her to the assisted living at “A Love for Life” where she was cared for and loved by the wonderful caregivers, medical staff, and hospice until the end.

In August of 2016, the family celebrated Martie’s 100th birthday with family, friends, nieces and nephews from as far away as Germany.

Martie is survived by her daughters Judy and Leslie, grandchildren; Patrick, Deborah, Todd, Tony and Tracee. Great grandchildren; David, Carmen, Amadeo, Samantha, Trae, Marc, Shelby, Tyler, and Hayden. Great-great grandchildren; Angelina, plus many other family members and friends.

Memorial Service will be at the Bear Canyon Retirement Home, 4440 Morris St. NE, from 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM on May 12, 2018. Additional parking is available at the Dental offices just south of Bear Canyon.
