Mary Lou Palmer

October 27, 1921 — May 28, 2017

Mary Lou Palmer, A beloved mother, sister, grandmother and friend, Mary Lou passed away at her home on Sunday, May 28, 2017 surrounded by her children. She was 95 years old.

Born in Pittsburgh, PA, Mary Lou was the daughter of the Rev. William and Mrs. Mary Marquis. She graduated with a liberal arts degree from Mt. Union College in Ohio, which is where she met Myron Palmer (Nick). She and then Lt Palmer were married in June of 1943 before he left for Australia during WWII. After the war, Mary Lou and Nick eventually settled in the Pittsburgh area (Bethel Park, then Gibsonia), and began a family with the birth of their  Children Mark, Mary Anna, David, and James.

Mary Lou lived a rich and spiritual life. She was active in the United Methodist Church. She volunteered for Meals on Wheels, local libraries, and the Center for Action and Contemplation. She was an avid reader, and wrote thoughtful cards and letter through the years. She also loved the outdoors and the wonders of the natural world, from camping when she was younger, to hiking in the Colorado Rockies in her 80’s.

She truly loved the people (and animals) who were lucky to be part of her life, and gave willingly of her time and energy to others who needed it. Her caring nature impacted all who crossed her path as one whose “compassion lights up the whole earth” and whose “Kindness endures forever.” She will be forever in our hearts.

Mary Lou is survived by her brother David (Gloria); her children Mary Anna, David (Cara Lee), and James (Norma); her daughter-in-law Jane (Bill); her grandchildren Justin (Kristen), Nathan, Ryan and Sarah; her great grandchildren Elizabeth, Matthew and James; and a loving group of friends and extended family from New Mexico and Pennsylvania.
