Torres Sr., Max A.
Age 83, member of a prominent Socorro business family and owner of Sunset Liquor, died Saturday night, December 29, 2018, with Priscilla and all eight of their children at his side. He was born in Socorro, NM on August 2, 1935, to Joe and Gertrude (Baca) Torres. He attended local schools and followed in the footsteps of other Torres men in carving out a 50 year career centered on business and politics, both which he loved and was devoted to. Max was in his element talking to people about local history and of course, politics, a lifelong avocation. As life changed, so did the business, adapting to each new challenge that came along, including a devastating fire. But like Max himself, the family rose from those ashes to rebuild the business and keep the doors open. In its heyday, the Sunset was a popular entertainment venue with live bands on weekend nights. Max was active in the Republican Party at the local, state and national levels, serving as a National Delegate to the Republican National Convention and with Priscilla, attending inaugural ceremonies for Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush. Max was extraordinarily proud of his family. He is survived by his wife of 63 years Prescilla; his children, Max Torres Jr. (Mona), David Torres, Karen Armijo (Alan), Jennifer Greene (Kelly), Joe Louis Torres (Esther), James Torres (Bonnie), Darren Torres (Mary "Bunny"), and Christopher Torres (Mandy). He also leaves behind sisters, Barbara Sanchez (Gilbert), Theresa Torres; brother, Robert Torres; 22 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. He is preceded by his grandson, Brad Armijo, and great grandson, Max Torres IV. Rosary to be recited on Friday, January 4, 2019, at 7:00 pm at San Miguel Catholic Church, 403 El Camino Real , Socorro. Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated on Saturday, January 5, 2019, at 11:00 am at San Miguel Catholic Church. Celebrant Father Hickman. Burial will take place at San Miguel Catholic Cemetery following service. Pallbearers will be Max Torres III, Erik Sanchez, Justin Greene, Austin Armijo, Marcus Torres, and Felipe Chavez.
