Age 51, passed away Saturday, November 8, 2014 surrounded by family and friends.  He was born in Concord, MA on September 16, 1963, to Onesimo Montoya and Christine Schroeder.  He graduated from Cibola High School in 1981 and went on to attend the United States Military Academy in West Point, NY, receiving a Bachelor’s degree in 1985.  After serving in the active duty, Michael went on to attend the University of New Mexico, graduating with a Master’s of Arts in Latin American Studies.  He served in the Army for twenty nine years rising to the rank of Colonel.  During his military career, he earned the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Army Oversees Training Ribbon, Kosovo Campaign Medal, NATO Medal, Ranger, Airborne, and Air Assault Badges and was a Master Aviator, qualified in Fixed and Rotary Wing Aircraft.  Michael also served as a Foreign Area Officer with duty in Latin American in addition to being a member of the US Army Golden Knights.  He was employed by the New Mexico National Guard after leaving the active duty in 1996 and married Sonya Mauer on March 19, 2001 in Santa Fe, NM.  He loved history, traveling, attending sporting events, reading and most of all spending time with his family.  He was preceded in death by his brother, Charles Montoya.  Michael is survived by his wife; Sonya Montoya of Albuquerque, NM, daughter Melissa Montoya of Westchester, NY, daughter Jessica Montoya of Albuquerque, NM, step-daughter Meagan McGee of Huntsville, AL, step-son Jacob McGee of Albuquerque, NM, mother and step-father, Christine and William Schroeder of Albuquerque, NM, father, Onesimo Montoya of Albuquerque, NM, brothers Anthony Montoya, David Montoya, Richard Montoya, Robert Montoya, Andrew Montoya, along with numerous aunts, uncles, nephews and nieces.  A Rosary will be held on Sunday, November 16, 2014 at 5:00 p.m. at Daniels Family Funeral Services, 7601 Wyoming Blvd, NE Albuquerque, NM 87109 with a reception to follow at 6:00 p.m.  A Mass will be held on November 17, 2014 at 12:30 p.m. at The Risen Savior Catholic Church at 7701 Wyoming Blvd NE Albuquerque, NM 87109.  Interment to follow at Santa Fe National Cemetery at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given in Michael’s honor to the New Mexico Cancer Center http://www.nmcancercenter.org/ or 4901 Lang Ave. NE, Albuquerque, NM 87109.
