Moore, Michael David, Commander, U.S. Navy, Retired

Age 63, passed away Saturday, February 17, 2018 at his home in Albuquerque, NM. He was born in Socorro, NM on July 1, 1954, to Ernest and Elizabeth (Cronin) Moore. He enjoyed hunting and loved to deep sea fish, winning many fishing tournaments. Commander Dave Moore graduated from the University of New Mexico in 1976. He entered the Navy through the Aviation Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, FL and was commissioned in January 1978. He completed flight training at NAS Beeville, TX and was designated a Naval Aviator in July, 1979. Commander Moore's first assignment was to Attack Squadron ONE TWO TWO (VA-122) at NAS Lemoore, CA. After completing his initial qualification in the A-7E Corsair, he was assigned to Attack Squadron NINE SEVEN (VA-97) on board the USS CORAL SEA (CVA-43). While attached to the squadron, he served as Assistant Operations Officer and Maintenance Branch Officer. Following this tour he attended Defense Language Institute in Monterey, CA and then was assigned as an Exchange Pilot with the Venezuelan Air Force. During this tour he qualified in three different aircraft and served as a flight instructor and officer in charge of the air-to-grounds weapons department. In 1986, Commander Moore was assigned as the Flight Deck Officer and Aircraft Handling Officer on board the USS ENTERPRISE (CVN-65). His next assignment was to the Attack Squadron ONE TWO TWO (VA-122) flying the A-7E Corsair. Following graduation from the Strike Leader Advanced Tactics School at Naval Strike Warfare Center, Fallon NV, Commander Moore was assigned to Strike/Fighter Squadron NINE SEVEN (VFA-97) where he served as Safety Officer, Operations Officer and Maintenance Officer on board USS CARL VINSON (CVN-70). During Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm he was selected as a Navy representative to the Joint Forces Air Component Commander under Navy Central Command. He also served as a member of the Navy Airborne Command Element. Following Desert Storm, he reported to Naval War College, Newport, RI, as a student in the Naval Command and Staff curriculum. Upon completion he was then assigned to Training Air Wing One (CTW-1) where he served as the Operations Officer responsible for the operational supervision of the Navy's largest jet air wing. Commander Moore was then selected to attend the prestigious Inter-American Defense College, Fort McNair, D.C. His last assignment prior to retirement, he served as the United States Defense and Naval Attache to Jamaica and the Cayman Islands. He also served as Naval Attache to Haiti. Commander Moore retired in 1999. In addition to his Bachelor's Degree in Economics he holds a Master of Arts Degree in National Security and Strategic Studies. During his career, Commander Moore logged more than 2,300 flight hours in tactical jets and accumulated 750 carrier landings on board four different aircraft carriers. His awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal (2), United States Coast Guard Achievement Medal and various unit citations. He is preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Ernest "Skipper" Moore. He is survived by his sister, Elizabeth "Becky" Moore; niece, Kristina Ericksen Sobieski; nephew, Michael Ward and wife, Lily; great niece, Rose Ward; and great nephews, Benjamin Ward, Lucas Ward, and Gryphon Sobieski. A graveside Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, March 3, 2018 at 1:00 pm at the San Acacia Cemetery.
