Nan Jean Byczynski

Nan Jean Byczynski, born in Victoria, Texas on October 14, 1937, passed peacefully in her sleep surrounded by family on September 30, 2024. She was raised in Victoria and as a young girl loved being a Girl Scout and could be seen riding her horse bareback throughout the city. She attended Patti Welder High School where she was the Yearbook Senior Editor, in the National Honor Society and on the Honor Roll. She met her husband of 68 years, Robert Thomas Byczynski (Bob), at Foster Air Force Base in Victoria where he was an instructor in the service, and she was a base secretary. They married on August 5, 1956, and spent their first year living in Chicago, Illinois, Bob’s hometown, before moving to Houston, Texas in 1957. They spent the next 47 years living and working in Houston, where they also raised their two daughters, Lynda and Diane, and welcomed 4 grandchildren: Jason, Amy, Alyssa, and Alec. When Bob retired, they moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico to be closer to their Red River, New Mexico cabin in the mountains. They spent the next 20 years hosting and entertaining friends and family at their Red River home. During those years, 5 great-grandchildren blessed their lives as well: Carson, Rylie, Logan, Annabelle, and Eli.

When Nan wasn’t with family, she was making new friends everywhere she went. She had a beautiful smile and enjoyed talking to people. She loved to shop and spent time talking with shop owners and employees alike. Nan never met a stranger! She will be remembered for the love she showed everyone she encountered and the way she loved and served her family and friends.

Nan is survived by her husband, Robert, her two daughters, Lynda Green (Greg) and Diane Powers (Steve), 4 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Floyd and Ollie Whitley, and her brother, Floyd Wilson Whitley.

A remembrance of her life will be held at a later date in Victoria, Texas.
