Weiss, Nancy Jane (Flora)
Age 77, unexpectedly left us on, December 8, 2016, near her home in Socorro, NM. Nancy was born on August 4, 1939, to a farmer's family near Savannah, MO. Growing up on a small homestead, Nancy was a hard worker, driving the Farmall B through the fields, taking care of barnyard animals, and helping her mother. She even had to ride a horse to attend grade school. At Savannah High School, she played basketball, served on the student council, and participated in speech and Spanish clubs. She also liked to cut the rug. A future sister-in-law saw her for the first time at a school dance and described her as a " striking black-headed girl in a red jumper and white sweater switching out records." Always friendly, her senior yearbook song was " Smile Awhile." After high school, Nancy attended junior college, later graduating from Platte-Guard Business School. Soon after, seeking adventure, she left Missouri for Denver, CO. She dated an early Denver Bronco, Austin "Goose" Gonsoulin, before meeting her permanent dance partner, Bill Weiss. She and Bill married several years later on October 23, 1965. As Nancy built a family and Bill built a career in oil and gas, they lived in Denver, Evansville, Indiana, Burgettstown, Pennsylvania; and Abilene and Allen TX, before moving to Socorro, NM in 1985. While in Socorro, Nancy worked at New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology; assisted Bill with his company, Correlations; and volunteered for many years in the gift shop at the Socorro County Hospital. Nancy was a sweetheart, loved deeply by her family, neighbors, and friends. She was genuinely kind to people, often putting their needs before her own. She loved animals, especially cats. Over her life, she mothered horses, llamas, dogs, guinea pigs, and many, many (many) cats. She loved her family (and gran-cats), enjoyed calls and visits with her clan and their associated critters. Nancy is survived by daughter, Wendy Lyn Weiss and her husband, Robert Earl Mace; her son, Jason William Weiss; her sister, Mary Dale Maupin; her brother, John Franklin Flora and his wife Judy; numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews; many of which she was close to; her god-daughter, Kea Linda D'Elia; and her cat Chloe. Nancy is preceded in death by her husband, William Walter Weiss; her daughter, Linda Jane Weiss; her mother, Mary Gladys (Fisher) Flora; and her father, Franklin Hill Flora. Visitation will be Wednesday, December 14, 2016 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at Daniels Family Funeral Services, 309 Garfield, Socorro, NM. Services will be held Thursday, December 15, 2016 at 10:00 am at First Presbyterian Church, 304 McCutcheon Avenue, Socorro, NM with Laura Niles Finch and Jeffery A. Finch officiating. Interment to follow at Luis Lopez Cemetery, Luis Lopez, NM. Pallbearers will be Wendy Weiss, Jason Weiss, Tony Flora, Alex Maupin, Brian Flora and Robert Mace. Honorary Pallbearers are John Flora, Reid Morrison, Esau Aragon, Ted Armijo, Joe Lopez, Patrick Rosas and The Bills Club. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of your choice. "What we have once enjoyed, we can never lose; all that we have loved deeply, becomes a part of us."
