Naomi Alberta Shinn Varner, 93, a resident of Albuquerque and later Rio Rancho, NM since 1958, passed away peacefully on November 18, 2015 with her loving family by her side. She was born in Hull, Illinois on April 12, 1922. She was the daughter of Clarence E. Shinn and Verna Mae Shinn and spent her childhood years on the family dairy farm in Hannibal, Missouri. After graduating from high school, she left for California to join the war effort. She helped build aircraft at Convair in San Diego, CA. She met her husband John Varner during this time. At the end of WWII they married and had 4 children.
Naomi retired from APS as a cafeteria manager. John and Naomi enjoyed traveling together after their retirement and would often meet family members in Arizona. She was very active and loved to go to water aerobics at the Y. Baking was a signature hobby of hers and she delighted many with her confections. Naomi’s family was always her top priority. She enjoyed spending time with them and helping out in any way she could. She will be forever missed.
She is survived by her children Ralph W. Varner, Judy A. Nafus (Bobby), Waneta Petree (Ronald), 11 Grandchildren, 13 Great Grandchildren, 2 Great Great Grandsons. 1 Brother in Law and 2 Nephews. She is proceeded in death by her husband John W, Varner, her son James Richard Varner and her Grandson Jeremy Blane Doege. A private family service will be held at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe, NM.
The Family would especially like to thank Palmilla Memory Care for their dedication, care and patience during Naomi's residence there. The Family would also like to thank the Doctors, Nurses and staff at Presbyterian Hospital Albuquerque who assisted in Naomi’s care.
