Nellie Barela Barnes

Barnes, Nellie Barela Age 92, passed away in the early hours on Monday, May 12, 2014, peacefully in her home in Socorro, NM surrounded by family and friends. A long time resident of Socorro, Nellie was born on March 22, 1922, to Gabriel and Isabel (Padilla) Barela. Gabriel and Isabel had seven other children, of which Nellie was the youngest and last surviving daughter. Nellie was a true people person, who loved meeting new people and maintaining strong bonds with her family and friends. Nellie was a long time member of the Harwood Methodist Church, becoming involved in many church related activities, including enchilada dinners and Christmas plays. She loved her long time job at the Bosque del Apache, because not only did she enjoy meeting new people, but was also an avid lover of animals. She is preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Jennie Padilla, Josephine Montoya, Sadie Montoya, Flora Gaddis, Adelena Montoya, and Eugenia Mora; brother, Gilbert Barela; and her first husband, Thomas Newboldt. Nellie is survived by her husband of 41 years, Otis Barnes; daughter, Louise Errett and husband, Ellis; son, Thomas Newboldt and wife, Pam; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Her family was her strongest bond and she is greatly missed. Services will be held on Thursday, May 15, 2014 at 10:00 am at the St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 1000 Goad, Socorro with Pastor Jim Montoya officiating. Interment to follow at the Socorro Cemetery. Pallbearers will be John Kimble, Jason Kimble, Ellis Errett, Jose Lozano, Clarence Montoya and Brian Errett.
