Otero, Nora Lee
Age 81, was born September 10, 1936 in Socorro, NM. She entered the Gates of Heaven on June 11, 2018. Nora was a dedicated mother and wife. She attended Valley High School in Albuquerque during the 1950's. Nora attended a small Community College in California and her high grade point average won her a scholarship to UCLA in Los Angeles. She dedicated her life to education and helping others. Nora majored in English Literature ant the Works of Shakespeare. In Nora's early years she was an Activist and a Liberal for Human Rights. She continued her education when she returned home to New Mexico and attended the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque and New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, NM. She worked for the University of New Mexico Extension Services in both Albuquerque and Las Cruces. She taught Nutrition to poverty level families and held workshops and classes. In Nora's later years she belonged to several New Mexico Co-Counseling Women's Groups. Workshops were held in Albuquerque, Las Cruces, Jemez and Taos. Nora gave her life to counseling groups and helping women. She is survived by her husband of 34 years, Sertil Kanbar, though separated still a beloved friend whom never left her side during the last 6 challenging years of health issues. Nora is also survived by her children, Patrick Otero (42), Renee Moya (56), Tammie Watson (58), Norine Young (64), and foster daughter, Ramona Nabahe (56); grandchildren, Rachael Watson (Tammie's daughter), Teresa Hanlon, Lee Desoto and David Desoto (Norine's children); great grandchildren, Patricia and June (Teresa's children), Marc, Elliano, Gabriel, and Breanna (Lee's children); great great gandchild, Billi (June's baby); sisters, Patty Harsh of Nevada, Ida, Rosanne, Julie, Dinnie, Nina, Sara, Cindy, Juanita and their children of Socorro; step mother, Mary Otero of Socorro; brothers, Tony Otero, Tommy Otero, and Michael Otero of Socorro and their children; nieces, Tina Callahan of Albuquerque, Michelle and Meredith of Nevada, Elizabeth of Ventura, CA and their children; nephews, Rick of San Diego, Michael and Matthew of Nevada, Orlando of Ventura and their children; cousins, Sharlene Roo of Oregon and her children, Rick, Cheryl and Pat of Socorro and their children; great nieces and nephews, Tabitha, Cassie, Ian, Mike and Thomas. There will never be another Nora Lee Otero. She will be greatly missed but never forgotten. May you rest in peace our precious mother and friend. The Holy Rosary will be recited on Saturday, June 30, 2018, at 9:30 am at San Miguel Catholic, 403 El Camino Real, Socorro with the Mass of Resurrection to be celebrated immediately following at 10:00 am at San Miguel Catholic Church. Father John Anasiudu as Celebrant. Burial will take place on Thursday, July 5, 2018 at 10:00 am at the San Miguel Catholic Cemetery.
