Onetha, Born in Alpine, TX, February 3, 1926 Pink and Mary Phelps. Onetha passed away Saturday, April 16, 2011 at home with her daughter by her side. Onetha was independent. She made several trips across the country with her beloved Pomeranian dogs by her side. She also enjoyed reading, especially mystery novels. She took great pleasure in sewing and knitting. Onetha was a creative artist making several original latch hook rug wall hangings for herself and family. After raising two children, she returned to college, receiving a bachelor’s degree from New Mexico Tech. She then went to work for the State of New Mexico as a social worker. She retired in 1988, beginning her cross country adventures, including the United States, Canada, and Alaska. Onetha is preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Francis Phelps; and her sister, Joyce Lovelace. She is survived by her constant companion, Achilles, “Killie”, a long haired Chihuahua; her sister, Cate Dixon; her son, Michael Ball and partner, Karen Kendall; her daughter, Shelly Rice and husband, Peter; two grandsons, Evan Rice; and Ian Rice; and many nieces and nephews. Following Onetha’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration and time to remember her life will take place on May 1, 2011 at 2:00 pm at the Rice Residence in Socorro.
