Otis O. Boren

Otis Orlan (Payton) Boren, �Obie� to his friends, age 85 and a life-long resident of New Mexico, died in Albuquerque on Wednesday, December 4, 2013, of natural causes. The son of Bessie Mary (Rogers) Payton and William Hoy Payton, Otis was born in Ft. Sumner, New Mexico on July 16, 1928. After Hoy�s death, Obie was raised by Bessie and her second husband, I.L. Boren. Obie attended New Mexico State University where he met and married his wife of more than 60 years, Leona H. �Lea� Boren. They married on July 7, 1948. After serving in the Army during the Korean Conflict, Obie came home to help manage the Rio Pecos Oil Co. and service stations around New Mexico. Lea and Obie settled down in Alameda to raise five children, and together they ran the Big Chief Truck Terminal in Alameda for many years. His was a rich life of hard work, family, and friends. He was an accomplished bowler and had a dry dry sense of humor. Anything he fixed stayed fixed for good. Though exacting and sometimes demanding of family and friends, he was generous and fiercely loyal to both. Friends like Hal, Barbie, Chuck, and Donna made his retirement a time well spent and enjoyed. Some of his favorite times were spent watching his horses run (particularly Strictly Wicked) and enjoying long cruises with Leona. Obie made sure to feed her turtles after his wife�s death. Obie is predeceased by his wife, Lea, and his friends might imagine them having dinner together on a cruise ship or sitting in comfortable chairs with their dogs. His little dog, Abby, was with him until the end. Obie is also preceded in death by his daughter Cindy Meadows. He is survived by his son, Michael Boren; daughters, Terry (James Ruppert) Boren , Shelly (Chuck) Jackson, Leslie (Pierre) Amestoy; grandchildren, Lindsey Kaufman, Elizabeth Boren, Koren Obenshain, Spenser and Darcy Ruppert, Hubert and Riley Jackson, William Meadows, and Pierre III and Adam Amestoy; great-grandchildren, Carleigh and Teegan Obenshain and Ryker Kaufman. They will all miss him. Obie is also survived by his brother-in-law, David Leo Matkins; by his nieces and nephew; by their children and grandchildren; by Lorrie Boren and Ron Meadows; and by his valued friends. We will all remember him with love. Those who wish to make contributions in his memory, in lieu of flowers, should make donations to their favorite charity. Memorial services will be held on Sunday, December 29, 11:00 am, at Daniels Family Funeral Services on Wyoming, with inurnment to follow at Vista Verde Memorial Park.
