Paul Edward Paulsen

On December 11, 2017, the world lost a man of many talents.  Paul Edward Paulsen was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on June 17, 1943 to parents, Edward Paulsen and Elizabeth Sette.  Paul was a naval and commercial pilot, sailor, scuba diver, guitar player and singer, handyman, electronics/computer wizard, videographer, fisherman, ham radio enthusiast from a very young age, and a lover of nature.  After defying all odds to live longer than a few weeks or months, he survived almost 8 years after his brain hemorrhage in January, 2010.  A testament to his love for life and family, he hung in there far longer than any doctor predicted.

Son, Michael Paulsen and wife, Helena; daughter Jennifer Hansen and her husband Kyle, and their sons, Paul’s two grandsons, Payton and Pacey shared many wonderful moments with Paul over the years.  Payton and Pacey learned many useful skills from their grandpa over the years.  Paul was always a kid at heart, and it showed in his enthusiasm for life and all it had to offer.

His wife, Judy, being an ardent animal welfare advocate, was fortunate to have Paul’s shared interest in her endeavors to rescue animals of all types, most notably, greyhounds (Judy founded the non-profit group, Greyhound Companions of New Mexico in 1992) – finding the dogs loving homes.  Paul and Judy spent hours upon hours rescuing wildlife when at their part-time home in Florida – most of whom had been tangled in fishing line and hooks left behind in the mangroves.  Paddling around in kayaks sometimes for entire days volunteering for the Southwest Florida Nature Conservancy, Paul and Judy desperately tried to save entangled or injured wildlife.

In New Mexico, Paul and his wife, Judy, contributed too many worthwhile causes, such as Animal Protection of New Mexico (APNM) and other animal welfare groups.  Because Paul was a naval aviator and a survivor of the Viet Nam war in the late sixties, he had a deep emotional connection with all veterans.  One of his favorite charities was Wounded Warriors.  Also, Paul was a “dad” to a young man who needed his guidance as Paul volunteered for Big Brothers Big Sisters.  Donations to any of the mentioned causes would be a great honor to Paul’s memory.

He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.  A great void was left on this planet when he passed away, but he is now at peace and is the Captain of his soul again.  He is flying heavenward over the ocean and upward to be one with the Cosmic All.
