Chavez, Pedro M. 89, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 17, 2013 surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Lemitar, NM on September 8, 1923 to Pedro and Rumalda (Maestas) Chavez. Pedro was raised on his father's farm. On December 28, 1942 he entered into active duty with the United States Army. Pedro served in WWII and received an honorable discharge on January 22, 1946. On May 26, 1947, Pedro married the love of his life, Flora. Together they raised their seven children on the family farm in Lemitar. Pedro also served as a foreman with the Santa Fe Railroad, retiring after 32 years of service. Pedro was a devoted family man and up to his very last days he spent much of his time adoring all of his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and especially his pride and joy, Jayda. Pedro was preceded in death by his loving wife, Flora (Pena) Chavez and two beloved grandchildren, Antionette Riboni and Jason Aguilar. He is survived by his devoted children, Rumalda Capatosto and husband, Salvatore; Paul Chavez and wife, Nadine; Gilda Hughes; Lavern Robinson and husband, Walter; Peter Chavez; Jaclyn Robinson and husband, Rusty Whitehurst; Michelle Chavez and Tony Garza; and Michael Chavez and wife, Melissa; 28 grandchildren, 44 great grandchildren, 14 great great grandchildren; his brother, Fermin Chavez and wife, Fora; and many other loving family members. A Holy Rosary was recited on Tuesday, January 22, 2013at 10:00 am at the San Miguel Catholic Church, 403 El Camino Real, Socorro, followed by a Mass of Resurrection which was celebrated at 10:30 am with Father Andrew Pavlak as Celebrant. Interment was held in the Lemitar Cemetery. Pallbearers were Paul Chavez Jr, Mike Chavez, Chris Chavez, Leonard Rivera, Chad Straley, and Gerald Hughes.Honorary Pallbearer was Leon Rivera.
