Peggy M. Candelaria, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and sister, passed away on January 6, 2025, at the age of 78. Peggy was born on May 18, 1946, to Natividad Candelaria and Mary (Duran) Brown, both of whom preceded her in death.
Peggy is survived by her brother, Roy Brown; her daughter-in-law, April Candelaria, and Robert and April's children; Robert Candelaria Jr., Anthony Candelaria, and Alexandria Flores; son and daughter-in-law, Vincent and Dawn Candelaria, and their children, Sarah, Megan, and Cosmo Candelaria; Peggy’s daughter, Antoinette Candelaria, and her children, Dominique Vasquez, Makayla, Marisa, and Elijah Candelaria. Peggy also leaves behind 18 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Peggy was proceeded death by her brothers, Wilfred Candelaria and Johnny Brown, her sisters, Erlinda Candelaria and Kathy Ortiz, her oldest son, Robert Candelaria and her great-grandson, Christian Candelaria.
Peggy grew up in the San Jose neighborhood of Albuquerque and attended Albuquerque High School. She married Gabriel Candelaria in 1962 and had their first child, Robert. Later they had two other children Vincent and Antoinette. Peggy became a military wife and spent several years traveling with her family to places like Mississippi, Port Hueneme, California, Hawaii, and even lived on Midway Island before returning and settling in Albuquerque.
Peggy enjoyed playing softball and bowling and was quite athletic in her younger years. Peggy was always known to be a little on the spunky side and loved playing bingo and the slots at the casino.
Peggy was one of the first employees at the Sandia Bingo in the tent and worked there for several years. She also spent time working in the laundry at MDC and as a foster grandparent at Dolores Gonzales Elementary, where she found great joy in working with children. For the last five years of her life, Peggy resided in a nursing home, where she fought hard to remain with her loved ones for as long as possible.
Peggy will be remembered as a person who loved life and loved her family.
