Showalter died Jan. 31, 2011, in Phoenix. He was born Nov, 22, 1943, in Ganado, into the Red Running into the Water People Clan for the Salt People Clan. Showalter grew up in Fort Defiance and graduated from Window Rock High in 1962, and attended Augustana College, Sioux Falls, S.D., where he majored in Accounting. He enjoyed bowling, golf, playing ‘Rez’ basketball and softball. He participated in local and national basketball tournaments with the Clay Fultz Bruins where he achieved many all-tourney awards. Showalter worked for the ONEO, NTUA, BIA, Autom, and retired from the Philosophy Corporation in Phoenix. Survivors include his sons, Darren Showalter of Nashville, Tenn., Brian Showalter of Bernalillo; daughters, Valery Brandow of Tempe, Erin Showalter of Phoenix; brother, Richard Showalter of Window Rock; sister, Mary Richards of St. Michaels; eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren. Showalter was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel M. Showalter Sr., Marjorie Showalter; brothers, Daniel M. Showalter Jr., Robert Cupp Sr.; daughter, LaPrima Nicole Showalter. The family will receive relatives and friends at the Navajo Nation Museum, following services. Arrangements are entrusted to Tse Bonito Mortuary.
