Raymundo Moises Chavez was born on November 28, 1915. He was born to Casimiro Chavez and Macedonia Montoya in the small town of El Carmen, New Mexico. Raymundo was one of nine children. His siblings were Conferina, Amadeo, Margarito, Lola, David, Floyd, Rose, and Gloria.
Raymundo was a Christian who believed in Jesus, and it reflected in how he portrayed himself to the world, his coworkers, his friends and neighbors, his church, his wife Elsie and his family. Growing up on a ranch taught him the value of hard work, the importance of living off the land, harvesting what you sow, gratitude for every blessing, never giving up, trusting in God, the value of prayer and giving to others, greeting others with a smile and good cheer, the pride in a job well done, the value of getting a good education, and the enduring value of family-time, a good laugh, and frequent family celebrations. These same values he instilled in his children, and their children, and their children.
For instance, Equipped with a high school education, Raymundo knew the value of a good education and the benefit it would bring to his children. His mantra to his children was “finish school, get a good education.” He worked many undesirable jobs in New Mexico and Colorado to have enough to support his family and help pay for his children’s education at Menaul High School and various colleges, universities, and trade schools.
As his children, he taught us the value of having God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit in our life, why attending church and engaging in fellowship are important to your character, and how prayer can work miracles.
Legacy is about life and living. It helps us decide the kind of life we want to live and the kind of world we want to live in. Raymundo lived and leaves a great legacy as evidenced by how he lived his life and affected the lives of many people during his almost 102 years on earth.
Raymundo is survived by his brother and two sisters, his wife Elsie, his five children, his 15 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
