Romero, Refugia "Cookie"

Age 86, passed away Sunday, February 18, 2018 at her home in Socorro surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Socorro, NM on August 4, 1931, to Frank and Avelina (Marquez) Montoya. Cookie enjoyed living in Socorro all of her life. She loved her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She graduated from Socorro High School and was always a Warrior fan, supporting the teams and cheering on her children and grandchildren. She also loved to cheer on the boxer, Holly Holm. She grew up on Spring St. with her parents. After she married Daniel H. Romero in June of 1952, he built her a home across the street from where she grew up. Cookie enjoyed gardening, visiting and reading the paper and working the puzzles. She also enjoyed cooking for her large family and was always the last to sit down to eat. She enjoyed walking around New Mexico Tech with her son Peter and her one and only favorite dog, Sammi Girl. Cookie will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Our hearts will always ache, but we know Mom is in a better place. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 51 years, Daniel Romero; siblings, Rosita Lopez, Arturo Montoya, David Montoya, Anita Lopez, Frances Apodaca, Domie Mendoza and Barbara Lyson; and her favorite dog, Sammi girl. Cookie is survived by her children, Peter Romero, Carmen Lobitz and husband, Don, Nick Romero, Paul Romero, Loretta Manning and husband, Rick, Frank Romero and wife, Lori, Herman Romero and wife, Annabell, Veronica Moore and husband, Russell, and Barbara Edrington and husband, Mikel; sister, Marcella Garcia and husband, Ignacio; grandchildren, Amanda Cowan and husband, Aaron, Nina Carrejo, Erin Romero, Randall, Romero, Paul Romero Jr., Haley Raymond, Ryan Romero, Brandon Raymond, Levi Romero, Sean Moore and Danielle Moore; great grandchildren, Zamari Faith Romero, Jordan Romero, and Jason Romero. The Holy Rosary to be recited on Thursday, February 22, 2018, at 7:00 pm at San Miguel Catholic Church, 403 El Camino Real , Socorro. The Mass of Resurrection will be held on Friday, February 23, 2018, at 9:00 am at San Miguel will burial to follow at the San Miguel Catholic Cemetery. Father Stephen Hickman as Celebrant. Pallbearers will be all of Cookie's grandchildren. There will be a reception at the DAV, 200 5th N, Socorro, NM. immediately following the burial.
