Rev. Levine K. Hagen of Rio Rancho was called home to our Lord and Savior on May 4, 2017, at the age of 93. He was affectionately known as “Pastor” to those who knew him. Pastor was married to his dear wife “Amazing” Grace from 1948 until her passing in August 2014. Pastor is survived by his four children, Mary Preston, Kristi Hagen, Lee Jonathan Hagen, and L Kirk Hagen; by son-in-law Bernie Jones and daughter-in-law Kimberly Hagen; by his grandchildren Randall Preston and wife Alina, Katie Preston and Jessica Preston, Terry Rathburn and wife Nga, Mikael Flottman and husband Robert, and Sonja Bacahui and husband Marcus; by great-grandchildren Avalyn, Elysia, Caleb, Jayden, Carson, Hannah, Brittany, Sophia, and Milam; and great-great-grandchildren Olivia Grace and Myles.
Pastor was one of two members of the 1948 graduating class of Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato, Minnesota, and completed his studies in divinity at Concordia Theological Seminary in Saint Louis. He was then ordained in the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. Early in his ministry, Pastor was known as “The Flying Parson.” He piloted a small plane to and from his small congregations in Montrose and Gunnison, Colorado. Pastor lived his life as a true Christian. He was uninterested in theological debates, and was always ready to help others unconditionally. Pastor understood the New Testament to be his marching orders. He was a missionary in Dinétah for a while, where he proudly shared his convictions, and at the same time respected and learned from the convictions of others. He volunteered as a police and prison chaplain in Albuquerque. He was especially proud of his work with New Mexico’s intellectually disabled citizens. Among Pastor’s favorite Bible verses is James 1:25; “Whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.” Pastor Hagen’s family is profoundly grateful for the skill and compassion of the many kind souls at Casa de Paz in Rio Rancho, who helped Pastor in his transition. His example and theirs will make all of us better people. Funeral services will be held on June 3, 2017 at 11:00 am at Calvary Lutheran Church in Rio Rancho. Friends and family are invited to a reception at Calvary Lutheran after the services.
