Richard Sylvester Kercher, born on March 11, 1932, in Evansville, Indiana, passed away peacefully in his home in Rio Rancho, New Mexico, on November 10, 2024, at the age of 92. A man of deep faith, unyielding dedication to family, and whose impact rippled through the hearts of everyone fortunate enough to know him. Richard’s life was a testament to his values and beliefs.
Richard’s journey was marked by notable accomplishments. After graduating from Reitz Memorial Catholic High School, he continued on to earn his bachelor’s degree, in Industrial Psychology from the University of Tulsa. His academic endeavors were complemented by his prowess on the football field, playing for the University of Tulsa, and later proudly serving his country in the U.S. Army for two years. During his military service, he played for the U.S. European Military Football Team, which opened the door to an early discharge, allowing him to fulfill a contractual commitment with the Detroit Lions. His athletic career spanned several leagues, including the Montreal Alouettes, and ultimately the Tucson Rattlers. In recognition of his impact on the sport, Richard was inducted into the Tulsa Athletic Hall of Fame in 2001, honoring his 1952 Gator Bowl win.
Yet, Richard was so much more than an athlete. He embraced life with open arms, transitioning from the thrilling world of football to a fulfilling career at Commercial Credit Corporation, where he became a respected leader and mentor for more than 40 years. His professional accomplishments were matched only by the love he held for his family. Richard and Marcie, his wife of 56 years, built a beautiful life together, nurturing their daughters— Audrey (Shawn) O’Connell, Christina Nelson, and Angela (Vance) Krier —and delighting in their journeys as devoted parents and cherishing their grandchildren: Faith (O’Connell) Manzanares, Taylor O’Connell, Jake Nelson, Matthew Krier, and Megan Krier.
In those cherished moments spent fishing, gardening, golfing, and camping, Richard showered his loved ones with warmth. His laughter echoed through simple spaces as he blended humor and wisdom into the lives of those around him. A man of faith, he found strength in his Catholic convictions, imparting lessons of love, compassion, and financial stewardship to his family—principles that now thrive in their hearts.
As we recount the legacy of Richard Sylvester Kercher, let us remember the bear-hugs that embraced us, the laughter shared on sunny days, and the cherished memories that will forever remain etched in our hearts. He leaves behind a beautiful tapestry woven with love, respect, and faith, a reminder that the bonds we create transcend time.
Richard, although you have departed from this earthly realm, your spirit lives on in the stories we will share, in the lessons we will teach, and in the love that will continue to connect us. We thank you for your kindness, your laughter, and your unwavering love. You were not only a great man but a faithful husband, loving father and beloved friend.Richard was preceded in death by his parents Edward and Therese Kercher, brother James Kercher and sister Marilyn (Dan) Thomas.
Rest in peace, dear Richard. Your legacy of love will forever illuminate our lives.
In Lieu of flowers you may honor Richard by donating to “The National Right to Life Committee.”
