Robert W. “Bob” Lange, 69, of Santa Fe, New Mexico, passed away on October 25 after a lengthy illness. Born on December 29, 1947, to Robert and Ada Lange, Bob grew up in Lansing, Illinois, and graduated from Thornton Fractional South High School. Shortly after starting college, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served honorably from 1967 to 1970, with an extended tour of duty in Vietnam.
Bob completed a B.A. in English from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 1977 and began a long career in publishing that included writing, editing, proofreading, and managing book production. It was while working at The Dryden Press in Hinsdale, Illinois, that Bob met his future wife, Barb Bahnsen, and they married in 1994. They moved to Santa Fe in 2001, and Bob joined the Legislative Council Service at the New Mexico Legislature as a proofreader, retiring in 2014.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Doris Scarlett. He is survived by his loving wife, Barb Lange; sisters, Edie Lange, June Lange, and Lois (Kelly) Sanders; brother, Bill (Jackie) Lange; brother-in-law, Tom (Cindy) Scarlett; nieces, Tammy (John) Wenzel, Andrea (Eric Rommel) Thomann, Alex Lange, Holly Thomann, and Sophie Lange; nephews, Tom (Chrisy) Scarlett, Blake (Stephanie) Sanders, Johnny Lange, and Dylan Sanders; and many beloved grandnieces and grandnephews, aunts and uncle, cousins, in-laws, and friends.
Bob was warm, witty, kind, easy-going, and a keen observer of human nature and the world around him. He also had, especially in the last year of his life, amazing strength, determination, and courage. He was passionate about writing, had a deep love of family, and was a diehard Cubs fan. He found great joy in music, art, photography, poetry, travel, and good conversation. All who knew him will remember Bob’s laugh, his intelligence, his sense of humor, his ability to focus or to lapse into silliness, and his patience. He was much loved and is deeply missed.
A celebration of life will take place on Sunday, November 19, 2:00-5:00 pm, at Second Street Brewery, 1814 2nd Street in Santa Fe. This will be a casual and informal gathering to share memories and raise a glass to Bob. A memorial service in the Chicago area will be scheduled for next spring.
In lieu of sending flowers, the family requests that those wishing to make a gift in Bob’s memory contribute to a favorite charity or hospice organization.
